Types of Conservatorship in Texas

Child Custody and Types of Conservatorship in Texas

Understand the different types of conservatorship in Texas and what they mean for your parental rights.

Joint Managing Conservatorship (JMC)

In a Joint Managing Conservatorship, both parents share the rights and duties of parenting. This is the preferred arrangement in Texas, as it allows both parents to remain involved in the child's life.

Sole Managing Conservatorship (SMC)

A Sole Managing Conservatorship grants one parent exclusive rights and duties regarding the child. This arrangement is typically ordered when there are concerns about the other parent's ability to care for the child.

Possessory Conservatorship

A Possessory Conservator has the right to possession of and access to the child but does not make major decisions about the child's upbringing.
